Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a Justice on the Supreme Court of the United States and advocate for gender equality, passed away on Friday, September 18. She was 87 years old.
Bader Ginsburg was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1993, becoming only the second woman to serve as a justice. Prior to serving on the Supreme Court, she dedicated her career to gender equality. In 1972, she co-founded the Women's Rights Project at the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and later served as the Project's general counsel.
Among her many career victories, she helped ensure that women have the right to financial independence, men receive the same caregiving and Social Security rights as women, employers are not allowed to discriminate against employees based on gender, and schools that receive state funding must admit women.
Throughout her lifetime, Justice Bader Ginsburg was a strong advocate for women's rights - what she considered the "constitutional principle of the equal citizenship stature of men and women."
She leaves a legacy of dedication, determination, and hope.
