ACT will still be administered on December 12 at Jones High School for those students registered to test.
Dear Longhorn Community,
We have been moderately successful in reacting to this pandemic, and you may have noticed that we’ve made some difficult decisions in the last couple of weeks that are more proactive. After developing a detailed procedure for hosting indoor activities, primarily basketball, and after receiving more guidance from the OSSAA, we have decided to limit basketball attendance to game personnel only. Spectators will not be allowed in the gym or any buildings.
We have also made another difficult decision for tomorrow and all of next week. We will conduct remote learning district-wide for the week of 14 December. Students will not return to school for in-person classroom instruction until after the Christmas break. We are now scheduled to return to in-person instruction on 5 January.
We are seeing increased positive cases in both teachers and students throughout the district with many teachers being isolated or quarantined. 40% of the elementary is currently out, and this has increased over the last week.
During this week, teachers will be in their classrooms and communicating daily with students. This should work well with our secondary students, but I know it’s more of a challenge with our elementary students. Our elementary staff will continue to find the most effective practices to mitigate those challenges. If your family does not have the resources to complete assignments, please contact the school administration.
Meals will be available for pickup from 10:30 to 12:30 at the high school every day. On Fridays, weekend meals will be provided.
Finally, I know there are some activities that will be interrupted, and each one is important to each student. FFA students will still need to work with animals, and basketball has started their season. We will look at each activity and try to understand the critical aspect of onsite participation. There is no “one size fits all” policy to accomplish our goals. Our primary objective with this plan is to avoid putting 20 students and a teacher in a small class during this time of highly increased exposure.
The Jones community has been incredibly patient and understanding as we learn to navigate this pandemic. We value your trust, and we are asking for a little more. Please remember that as we try to be transparent and clear with our messaging, there are plenty of other variables that we continue to consider as we make these decisions.
Stay safe,
Carl Johnson, Ph.D.
Superintendent

Letter to parents,
As we end this challenging semester, I want to thank everyone for their patience in dealing with COVID-19 and trying to educate our students in this climate. Jones high school and staff are committed to our students and their educational needs. We understand the burden that families are going through during this pandemic. We want you to know, we will continue to work with you, but need your help on making sure work is being done during a quarantine.
We must continue the learning process even when someone is quarantined or has contracted the virus. Teachers have been using Google classroom to teach and reach students who are not in school. It is very important that students do daily work in Google classroom while quarantined. If a student is not feeling well or having internet issues while under quarantine teachers will work with them. If students do not complete and finish work in Google classroom, credit cannot be given. We do not want this to happen to our students. Unfortunately, we have some students not doing work in the Google classroom that we are concerned with, and we are addressing those situations.
With the end of the semester approaching, please make sure your child is doing the work when in quarantine. Remember to reach out to your teachers for help and guidance on any material you may need help with. We are here for you and always will be. Please don’t hesitate to email or call us. Thank you!
Mike Watkins
