The Musical Theater Songwriting Challenge is a program of the Arts Endowment in partnership with the American Theatre Wing (the producers of the Tony Awards among other activities). The goal is to nurture the next generation of songwriters from among the country’s high school students by engaging professional musical theater artists.
With the Songwriting Challenge’s emphasis on articulating the components and intent of a song, the program is a dynamic means for realizing the National Core Music Standards for Creating, and specifically the standards for Composition/Theory.
From all of the applications submitted to the Songwriting Challenge by students (almost 200 last year), six winners are selected to work with a mentor and music director to hone the student’s original song into a Broadway-ready composition that is then recorded by Broadway musicians and vocalists in New York City. You can learn more about the process at
https://www.arts.gov/national-initiatives/songwriting
The winning students have all noted that the experience of the Songwriting Challenge is extraordinary and life-changing. And the professional artists are thrilled to be part of invigorating their field with talent and energy. Here is the page for Tessa Barcelo, one of the 2019 winners with a video illustrating her recording session.
The deadline is March 6, 2020 at midnight Eastern Time. The Songwriting Challenge application is simple and is available at
