November is also National Scholarship Month! The month, developed by Scholarship America in 1998, and now sponsored by the National Scholarship Providers Association (NSPA), is a national campaign designed to raise awareness of the vital role scholarships play in reducing student loan debt and expanding access to higher education. It also recognizes the determination, ingenuity and drive of scholarship recipients across the country and brings awareness to the needs of all students as they work to achieve their educational dreams.

November is designated as National Native American Heritage Month. This observance commemorates the history, heritage, and culture of Native Americans and Alaskan Natives. It is during this month we acknowledge the vast achievements of America’s original indigenous people.

Help support Art Club and Prom 2023!!

Jones High School’s Red Ribbon Week culminated with Jones High School Students participating in “The Walking Dead”. This is to help visualize the information that was presented by our two guest speakers, Mark Woodward and Shelby Salazar. Every 15 minutes our Grim Reaper went around and pulled a student out of class. This student had their face painted to symbolize their death due to drugs and alcohol. This student was not able to interact with peers for the remainder of the day. We used statistical data from 2015, which indicated that every 15 minutes in this country a student aged 14-18 dies as a result of drugs and alcohol. Current research shows that in the past 2 years and during the pandemic, drug overdoses among teenagers have doubled, which actually puts the number at 1 every 6 minutes. Research is also indicating that this exponential increase is largely due to the rise of fentanyl.
Below is a quote from Joseph Friedman, UCLA addiction researcher:
“Teens urgently need to be informed about the rising danger. Accurate information about the risk of drugs needs to be presented in schools. Teens need to know that pills and powders are the highest risk of overdose, as they are most likely to contain illicit fentanyl. Pills and powders can be tested for the presence of fentanyl using testing strips, which are becoming more widely available. In addition, education and access to naloxone which can reverse overdoses, are needed in schools and other places frequented by teens.”

Congratulations to JHS Senior, Emily Coffey. Emily has signed Letter of Intent to continue her education at Missouri State University! Emily plans to major in business.
