JHS Seniors: Pete & Lela Stavros Scholarship Eligibility: Graduating Oklahoma high school seniors who are children and relatives of Oklahoma firefighters who are members of the Oklahoma State Firefighters Association (active or retired). All application materials will be reviewed by the Pete and Lela Stavros Educational Foundation and the Oklahoma State Firefighters Association to verify the applicant’s relationship to an Oklahoma State Firefighters Association member. Funds may be used for educational-related expenses such as tuition, fees and books at any academically accredited two-year, four-year or vocational technical nonprofit institution in the United States. Payments are made directly to the school. The Pete and Lela Stavros Educational Foundation was established following the retirement of Pete Stavros as director of legislation for the Oklahoma State Firefighters Association. Scholarships given by the Pete and Lela Stavros Educational Foundation honor his career and service as a firefighter and promote the couple’s interests in providing educational opportunities for the children of Oklahoma’s firefighters. A permanent endowment fund was established at the Oklahoma City Community Foundation in June 2002 and continues to receive contributions from association members across Oklahoma. JHS SENIORS: Valerie Koelsch Memorial Scholarship Eligibility: Dependents of union members from Local Union #124. Traditional students must be a child of Local Union #124, and must be able to demonstrate one year of competence in post high school education. Non-traditional students must be a member, spouse or child of Local Union #124 and must be 20 years of age or older. Definitions: Member – 1600 or greater hours of union labor in 12 months prior to application. Spouse – Currently eligible to be on a Local No. 124 member’s insurance. Child – A birth or legally adopted child who is a tax dependent and currently eligible to be on a Local No. 124 member’s insurance. (A dependent who is eligible at age 23 remains eligible to apply if they are continuously enrolled in college.) Reapplication: This scholarship is an award in the amount of $2,200 (reapplication process). Funds may be used for educational-related expenses such as tuition, fees and books at any academically accredited two-year, four-year or vocational technical nonprofit institution in the United States. Payments are made directly to the school. The Valerie Koelsch Memorial Scholarship was established in 1995 in memory of a local union member’s daughter killed in the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building bombing. It is an endowed scholarship fund of the Oklahoma City Community Foundation administered on behalf of Sheet Metal Workers Local Union #124. Due to OCS and Perry not having a JV girls team, there will be no JV Girls games tonight or Friday night. Boys JV games on both nights will begin at 5pm.

Black History Month Did You Know....

JHS Seniors: The Oklahoma City Association of Phi Beta Kappa awards scholarships to outstanding high school seniors in the Oklahoma County area each spring. Superior intellectual achievement and future promise are among the criteria used for selection. This year, they are offering two (2) scholarships in the amount of $2,500.00 each. The students should meet the following requirements: 1. Graduating senior of high academic achievement (ACT of 30 and/or SAT equivalent); 2. planned attendance at an undergraduate institution with a Phi Beta Kappa chapter (institutional chapters can be found at www.pbk.org under “Chapters”); 3. intent of majoring in a liberal arts discipline (humanities, fine arts, languages, sciences, social sciences); 4. applicant must complete the attached application and submit an essay as indicated; 5. if selected, the applicant must be interviewed by the Scholarship Committee and attend the PBK Annual Banquet on March 28, 2019 at the Oklahoma City Golf and Country Club in Oklahoma City; and, 6. the application deadline is Friday, March 1, 2019. Pre-enrollment and course selection for 2019-2020 school year will begin February 25. Mr. Moses will meet with Juniors throughout the day on February 25. He will meet with Sophomores throughout the day on February 26. He will meet with Freshman throughout the day on February 27. There will be an enrollment night for current 8th grade students on April 9th from 6 to 7 pm in High School Commons. Eastern Oklahoma County Technology Center will be at Jones High School on February 6 and 7 to provide information and recruit for enrollment at EOC. They will meet with Juniors on February 6 during 4th hour to provide information on EOC programs. They will meet with Seniors on February 6 during 5th hour to provide information on EOC Programs and 13th year scholarship. They will meet with Freshman on February 7th during 4th hour to provide information on EOC Programs, especially their Explore program. They will meet with Sophomores on February 7th during 5th hour to provide information on programs that they can enroll in their Junior year.

Today kicks off Black History Month. Did you know... DID YOU KNOW…… The story of Black History Month begins in 1915, half a century after the Thirteenth Amendment abolished slavery in the United States. That September, the Harvard-trained historian Carter G. Woodson and the prominent minister Jesse E. Moorland founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH), an organization dedicated to researching and promoting achievements by black Americans and other peoples of African descent. Known today as the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), the group sponsored a national Negro History week in 1926, choosing the second week of February to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. The event inspired schools and communities nationwide to organize local celeIn the decades that followed, mayors of cities across the country began issuing yearly proclamations recognizing Negro History Week. By the late 1960s, thanks in part to the civil rights movement and a growing awareness of black identity, Negro History Week had evolved into Black History Month on many college campuses. President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month in 1976, calling upon the public to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.”
