Red Ribbon Week is the nation’s oldest and largest drug prevention awareness campaign. Today, millions of people celebrate. Red Ribbon Week started after the death of Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, who in 1985 was brutally murdered by drug traffickers he was investigating in Mexico. After his death, people wanted to honor his sacrifice. Local celebrations began in California – where Camarena grew up – in 1985, and in 1988 the National Family Partnership started the first National Red Ribbon Week. As a tribute to Camarena during the initial local celebrations, high school friend Henry Lozano and Congressman Duncan Hunter, created “Camarena Clubs” and the wearing of a red ribbon to show their oppositions to drugs.

JHS Seniors interested in OU: Important scholarship updates from the University of Oklahoma. We are excited to share that we have expanded our qualifications for our Office of Admissions & Recruitment scholarships to allow more in-state students to receive awards. We have also added a new scholarship called the Sower Award and increased the amount of our National Merit package. At the same time, we have expanded the RaiseMe program, which allows students to earn micro-scholarships, to all high schools within Oklahoma, and our tuition rate has remained steady for the second straight year. Our goal as an institution is to increase college education access and recognize deserving students, and we hope these updates demonstrate that commitment. We want every top student in the state to think of the University of Oklahoma as their future college home, and we would appreciate it if you encouraged your students to apply to OU by Dec. 15 to be automatically considered for our scholarships. JHS Students: THE John Kennedy Profiles in Courage Essay Contest is now Open! The contest is open to United States high school students in grades nine through twelve attending public, private, parochial, or home schools; U.S. students under the age of twenty enrolled in a high school correspondence/GED program in any of the fifty states, the District of Columbia, or the U.S. territories; and U.S. citizens attending schools overseas. Past winners and finalists are not eligible to participate. Employees of John Hancock Financial Services and members of their families are not eligible to participate. Requirements The contest deadline is January 17, 2020 at 11:59 PM (EST). Essays can be no more than 1,000 words but must be a minimum of 700 words. Citations and bibliography are not included in the word count. Essays must be the original work of the student. John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy, and Edward M. Kennedy are not eligible subjects for essays. Essays must describe an act of political courage by a U.S. elected official who served during or after 1917, the year John F. Kennedy was born. The official may have addressed an issue at the local, state, or national level. See Contest Topic and Information and Helpful Tips for Writing Your Essay for more information. Essays about past recipients of the Profile in Courage Award will be disqualified unless they describe an act of political courage other than the act for which the award was given. Essays about the senators in Profiles in Courage will be disqualified. Essays must have a minimum of five sources. Source Material Essays with fewer than five listed sources will be disqualified. All participants must cite sources they used to research their topic throughout their essay. Please use parenthetical citations within the text. We can not accept citations in footnote form. Essays must include a bibliography. Accepted formats include APA, MLA, or Turabian. You must use a minimum of five selected sources. Please refer to Guidelines for Citations and Bibliographies. Essay Submission Students have the choice of either submitting their essay online (preferred) or of mailing their essay. All students must complete and submit a registration form online for student and school information. For instructions on how to submit your essay, see Registration and Submission. Mailed in essays for the 2020 contest must be postmarked by January 17, 2020. The Essay Contest encourages students to submit an original essay on a leader who demonstrated political courage as described by John F. Kennedy in his book, Profiles in Courage. Winners will have the chance to win 15 different scholarship prizes for college, including a $10,000 first-place prize. JHS SENIORS: Darin McBride Memorial Scholarship Eligibility: Graduating Oklahoma high school seniors Applicants must demonstrate involvement in little league, junior high or high school football (at least 3 years) Applicants must attend the University of Oklahoma Applicants must have a 3.20 GPA or higher Preference to students with financial need The award may be used for tuition, fees, books, equipment and/or supplies at the University of Oklahoma. This is a one-time award. No more than six credit hours may be completed online each semester. The Darin McBride Memorial Scholarship was established as a memorial gift in 2019 by Darin’s family and friends. This scholarship will be awarded annually to one graduating Oklahoma high school senior who played little league, junior high or high school football. Applicants for the scholarship must plan to attend the University of Oklahoma. This scholarship combines Darin’s passion for his alma mater and his love for coaching youth football, where he valued grit and perseverance. JONES HIGH SCHOOL will be celebrating Red Ribbon Week and Promoting a Drug Free Lifestyle OCTOBER 28-NOVEMBER 1. Below are our theme days. Monday—Camo Day = “Hide From Drugs” Students will also be given opportunity to sign a Drug-Free Pledge in their English Classes. Tuesday-Career Day = “See yourself in a Drug Free Future” Wednesday—Red Day =“Ready to say no to drugs” Thursday-SPACE/Tech Day—Being Drug Free is out of this world and Relay the Message-NO Drugs—Dress as favorite Space character and we will do a technology day. *Halloween costumes are also acceptable (NO MASKS OR ACCESSORIES) Friday—Longhorns are Proud to be Drug Free = School Pride/Green and White Day We will also be doing the "Walking Dead" on Friday.
