Seniors and Parents,
We want to start a graduation task force with stackholders, community leaders, board members, parents, teachers, students who are speaking at graduation, and Senior class officers to come up with ideas for graduation. We love our Seniors and parents. I am so sorry you are having to go through this and it isn’t fair. I can promise you we will honor our Seniors. We will be reaching out to individuals to establish some meetings on the Zoom app. Feel free to share your thoughts on our Facebook page. Thank you!
Mr. Watkins

Dear Longhorn Community,
Today during a special board meeting, State Superintendent Joy Hofmeister proposed, and the state school board accepted the recommendation to close all public school buildings through the end of the current academic year. The board also approved the recommendation to allow local districts to design and implement some form of “continuing education” to begin as soon as possible after April 5.
This process does not allow for on-site instruction and directs educators to observe the current mandates on social distancing. While we have about 10 days to determine how we can accomplish this, we anticipate some form of distance learning.
Distance learning includes two overarching types of instruction. The type that most of our students are familiar with is synchronous instruction. This type of distance learning takes place in an environment where the instructor and learner are in real time communication. It can be through video or audio. There is direct, immediate interaction and feedback during these lessons. An example is the concurrent classes many of our high school students take. There is a video with the instructor at the front of the room or on the computer and they conduct the class much like everyone is in the same room.
The other type of distance learning is asynchronous instruction, and it does not necessarily require any type of technology. In this environment, the instruction is conducted through communication that is delayed to meet the specific needs of everyone involved. The instructor may provide content through recorded media, emails, or even snail mail.
We expect to utilize both types of distance learning; however, the asynchronous delivery will have to be the primary form as it has the greatest chance to reach all of our students. As you can expect, our implementation will vary from each of our sites; however, you can expect your child’s teacher to make direct contact in the next week. If email is not available, a phone call may be necessary. Our goal is to limit the educational loss that is inevitable during time away from the classroom, and we are committed to ensuring that no student is penalized for a lack of resources during this time.
We are hoping to alleviate much of the stress that parents must be feeling while trying to provide instruction on their own. I would encourage parents to use Khan Academy https://www.khanacademy.org/ if available. This is a free resource that is an outstanding tool. Also, we are working on a process to provide mental health resources for all our families when needed.
We all have to accept that students across this country and at every level of education will experience some loss in skills. Our goal is to minimize loss by reinforcing current skills, and introduce new skills only where clear opportunities exist for all. Teachers will be prepared for in-depth diagnostic analysis when we return to a traditional setting. We will use that data to determine where to start and create a plan for getting back on track.
I know there is considerable anxiety concerning events like championship basketball, baseball, track, prom and graduation. We must continue to follow CDC, federal, state, and governing agency guidelines on social distancing and group events, so we’re limited on options. We continue to have discussions about these events, and we’re looking for ways to maintain these social events that are important to high school students while still being responsible for actions that might affect the health of our community.
We are all experiencing this together, so please don’t feel alone or that your child is at risk of falling behind his or her peers. It will not be easy, but I know what we’re made of. None of us will back away from the work or time that it will take to repair what might be damaged, so until we can Turn Those Horns Loose again, we’ll make this work.
It’s always A Great Day to be a LONGHORN!!
Carl Johnson, Ph.D.
Superintendent
Jones Public Schools

Thank you to the community for your patience! Planning is underway for Continuous Learning for our students.

Dear Longhorn Community,
I hope everyone is finding a way to enjoy your extended time with family during this extraordinary time. Regardless of politics or one’s personal inclinations toward news reporting on this crisis, we have a responsibility as Americans to abide by the directives provided by our elected officials. However, we have a responsibility as humans to be sincere in our actions to minimize and eliminate the health threats to ourselves and neighbors. This event brings with it considerable anxiety, and Jones Public Schools wants to be a source of relief not further stress.
As you know, the State Board of Education has voted to enact a mandatory, statewide closure of all public schools through April 3 (April 6 is the current return day). This closure may be lengthened due to public health and safety concerns. We encourage everyone to prepare for this possibility should it become necessary.
We have instructed all staff, other than specific personnel directed by the administration, to stay away from school grounds. If you have business with the school, please call or email the administration. Offices and all facilities will be closed during this time. Mwatkins@joneshs.k12.ok.us
Lelerick@jonesms.k12.ok.us Bguthery@jonesel.k12.ok.us
We will provide lunch and breakfast to all students enrolled in Jones Schools beginning
Monday, March 23rd. We will use a drive-through type pick-up at the high school. Pick-up will be from 9am until 11am. To avoid chaos (as much as possible), we will stagger the time for pick up by site. Please enter at the baseball gate on 4th street and follow the curb around to the SW entrance. School personnel will be outside with the meals. Elementary families should pick up from 9am until 9:45am. The middle school from 9:45am until 10:30am, and the high school will pick up from 10:30am until 11am. Families will pick-up BOTH meals at once. If you have students at multiple sites, of course you can pick up during either period for all students in the family. If you can’t make your suggested time, please come anytime during pick-up. We do not intend for the process to be a burden. We want to make it as efficient as possible. We expect to learn more as this process continues, so you should expect changes.
In a previous message, I told you that we were anticipating a plan to provide some instruction through online platforms; unfortunately, the state department of education has determined that no type of instruction will be allowed. It appears this has something to do with the law that governs this type of shutdown. We will, however, provide resources for at-home, parent led educational activities.
Due to social distancing recommendations, we will be reaching out individually to parents to set up a phone or video conference to complete IEP/504 requirements during the school closure. However, if these avenues are not acceptable, parents should work with school personnel to meet once school resumes. After the extended closure has ceased, IEP/504 teams are
responsible for reviewing on an individualized basis how the closure impacted the delivery of special education and related services to students eligible for IEP/504 services. Students may need additional or extended school year services (ESY) to make up the missed IEP/504 services.
Finally, much like the teacher advocacy days we missed a couple of years ago, we will adjust as needed, and it will most likely be needed often. Please do all you can to be a part of the solution.
Sincerely,
Carl Johnson, Ph.D. Superintendent Jones Public Schools

Scholarship luncheon update from the Oklahoma City Community Foundation:
With the Oklahoma State Board of Education’s recent announcement to close all Oklahoma schools, we have decided to cancel the Scholarship Luncheons at the Oklahoma City Community Foundation. We were excited to celebrate your students’ accomplishments, but we understand that the health of our staff, counselors, students and community comes first.
While we will not be rescheduling the luncheons, we will continue to celebrate your students on our social media platforms and through press releases sent to local media outlets. We will also share their names and photos on our digital sign to the east of our building on 10th and Broadway.
We will send each scholarship awardee a packet of information about their award, along with how they can claim their scholarship for fall 2020. Please advise your students to check their mail for these packets in the coming weeks.

JHS PROM rescheduled for May 15th at Skyline. Thank you to our school sponsors Mrs. Davenport and Mrs. Neal for being on top of this for our students.

JHS seniors: Please keep Mr. Moses of scholarships awarded. We would like to recognize your accomplishments on the school website and social media. You can email name of scholarship, dollar amount and to what school to cmoses@joneshs.k12.ok.us

ACT has cancelled the April 4 ACT. ACT will contact all student’s registered for this exam about rescheduling to June test date

With restrictions on college admissions officers and other issues related to COVID-19 the college fair scheduled for March 24 at Jones High School has been cancelled

The State Department of Education is expected to order all schools in Oklahoma to close until April 6. We appreciate our state leaders being proactive during this health crisis. Our administrative team has been working on plans to support our students and their families as much as we can. We have requested permission from the state to provide meals to all families that need that service. We have to consider the possibility that there will be subsequent, longer closures, so we are also working on plans to provide some modified instruction online. Students who do not have the opportunity to participate in online activities will not be penalized; however, we are working diligently to make sure EVERY student will have that opportunity. We hope to be able to provide details on these plans in the next few days.
