JHS SENIORS INTERESTED IN OU's NROTC Program: The Navy ROTC program is a great opportunity for your students to earn a scholarship. The program is for leaders who desire to serve as an officer in the United States Navy or Marine Corps and lead America’s finest in the Naval Services. Additionally, the NROTC program at OU offers an opportunity to compete for a $3,000 freshman scholarship that is awarded in the fall semester based on academics, physical fitness, and performance in the unit. For fall 2020, there will be up to 11 of these scholarships available. How your students can join OU NROTC: 1 – Apply for the national scholarship their senior year of high school. The deadline for this is December 31 of their senior year. Typically, students complete the application process during the summer between the junior and senior year in high school or very early in the senior year. 2 – The College Program, which is essentially the NROTC equivalent of being a walk-on football player on a college football team. The NROTC unit does not pay for any of the costs associated with their schooling, and at the end of their freshman and sophomore years in college, they have an opportunity to earn a three-year or two-year scholarship, respectively. If students participate in this program, they need to be prepared to pay for the full cost of college for the first two years at the university. The College Program application process runs from January 1–May 1 each year for the upcoming fall semester. Participation in the NROTC program also grants in-state tuition to the University of Oklahoma for out-of-state residents. The minimum requirement for scholarship applications are as follows: Navy: ACT/SAT Math – 21/540 ACT/SAT English (ACT) or Verbal (SAT) – 22/550 Combined Score of Math and English (ACT) Verbal (SAT): 47/1200 Marine: ACT – 22 Combined SAT – 1000 Combined College Program applications below these minimums will be considered on a case-by-case basis. For more information, visit the https://www.nrotc.navy.mil/ which contains a vast amount of information about the NROTC program nationwide. Additionally, this is where students will submit their application for the NROTC scholarship. Red Ribbon Week 1
Today our Jones Against Drugs Club will be performing the “Walking Dead” Our hope is to get across the effects of losing someone to drugs and alcohol. Every 15 minutes a teenager dies in the United States due to dangerous decisions related to drugs, alcohol, etc. This program today will provide a small demonstration. Every 15 minutes the Grim Reaper will come and pull a student out of class. This student will be painted up to be the Walking Dead. These individuals will return to class but will be unable to interact with their peers for remainder of school day. Remember we emphasize this information during Red Ribbon Week, but please carry this information year round. DO NOT DO DRUGS/ALCOHOL!!!

Today's Red Ribbon Week facts relate to alcohol: • Drinking too much can weaken your immune system, making your body a much easier target for disease. Drinking a lot on a single occasion slows your body’s ability to ward off infections – even up to 24 hours after. National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism • Teen drivers are 3 times more likely than more experienced drivers to be in a fatal crash. Drinking any alcohol greatly increases this risk for teens. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention • People who have their first drink at age 14 or younger are six times more likely to develop alcohol problems than those who don’t try alcohol until the legal drinking age. Helpguide.org • For adolescents ages 15 to 20, alcohol is implicated in more than a third of driver fatalities resulting from automobile accidents and about two-fifths of drowning cases. Helpguide.org • 4,358 people under age 21 die each year from alcohol-related car crashes, homicides, suicides, alcohol poisoning, and other injuries such as falls, burns, and drowning. National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism • The age limit of 21 years old for alcohol is based on research which shows that young people react differently to alcohol. Teens get drunk twice as fast as adults, but have more trouble knowing when to stop, binge drinking more often than adults. Mothers Against Drunk Driving-Why 21 • Combining drugs raises the risks of brain damage, heart attack, stroke and overdose exponentially. An average of 2.7 drugs is involved in every fatal overdose. shatterproof.org
