October 1 is very important date for Seniors going to College. This is the date the Free Application for Federal Student Aid(FAFSA) opens for students entering college in the Fall of 2021. JHS Seniors interested in Langston University: You can complete your application at www.langston.edu/appy-now Langston does not charge an application fee and there is no essay requirement on their application. Langston is the only Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in the State of Oklahoma. Their scholarship eligibility begins at 2.50 GPA. Priority scholarship deadline is December 1. JHS Seniors interested in Wichita State: Remember Students from Jones High School do not have to pay out of state tuition to attend Wichita State. You are eligible to participate in their Distinguished Scholarship Invitational. 1. You must apply for admissions by October 15. You can apply at wichita.edu/apply 2. Have a minimum ACT Score of 27 or 3. Have a weighted GPA of 3.5 or 4. Rank in top 10% of your high school class. 5. Complete and submit DSI application by November 1 application can be found at wichita.edu/scholarshipcompetitions There may be other scholarships at WIchita State that you are eligible to compete.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a Justice on the Supreme Court of the United States and advocate for gender equality, passed away on Friday, September 18. She was 87 years old. Bader Ginsburg was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1993, becoming only the second woman to serve as a justice. Prior to serving on the Supreme Court, she dedicated her career to gender equality. In 1972, she co-founded the Women's Rights Project at the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and later served as the Project's general counsel. Among her many career victories, she helped ensure that women have the right to financial independence, men receive the same caregiving and Social Security rights as women, employers are not allowed to discriminate against employees based on gender, and schools that receive state funding must admit women. Throughout her lifetime, Justice Bader Ginsburg was a strong advocate for women's rights - what she considered the "constitutional principle of the equal citizenship stature of men and women." She leaves a legacy of dedication, determination, and hope. #RIPJUSTICEBADERGINSBURG

National Hispanic Heritage Month is recognized from September 15 – October 15 celebrating the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico, Chile, and Belize also celebrate their independence days during this period. Columbus Day in Mexico (Día de la Raza) is on October 12.
