Driver Education Initiative Award – Annual Scholarship Opportunity
National Driving and Traffic School is proud to announce their 2020 scholarship opportunity, entitled “In the Driver’s Seat.” The company is seeking to reward essay applicants $3,000 in scholarships- for students entering college or already enrolled in a higher education institution – on the topic of being a safer driver.
Driver Education Initiative 2020: In the Driver’s Seat
The Topic of this year’s essay submissions deals with the serious implications of being a driver. In America, an average of 34,000 people die each year as a result of driving. This is more people who have died in one year as a result of driving, than the total number of American soldiers who have died from war in Iraq and Afghanistan combined. The total number of Americans who die within the span of two years as a result of driving is more than the total number of American deaths from the Vietnam war. This is to say, driving is more dangerous and deadly for our nation than being involved in combat, and highlights the serious consequences of being negligent on the road.

THE JAMES ALAN COX FOUNDATION FOR STUDENT PHOTOJOURNALISTS
Type of Awards:
Five (5) Digital SLR Cameras will be awarded to five (5) high school students. (High school applicants should only submit still photographs. The video awards are for college and graduate students only.)
Five (5) $2,500 scholarships will be awarded to five (5) college or technical school students, payable to their school. Four awards will be for video work while one will be for still photography.
One (1) $2,500 scholarship will be awarded to one (1) graduate student, payable to their school, for video work.
Focus of work and entries: PHOTOJOURNALISM. (Please see the 2019 or previous years’ scholarship recipients to view examples of winning photographs and videos.) Scholarships will be awarded to those students whose work “tells a story”. This is a fairly broad topic and may include a variety of subject matter and approaches (breaking news, sporting events, etc.) Please keep in mind, for the still photography submissions, that we are NOT looking for “art” photography.
One suggestion, for subject matter, is the current crisis our world is facing: COVID-19. All of our lives have been changed by the Coronavirus. Much like 9/11 changed the lives of your parents, this event will change your world forever. You can show, through images or video, how COVID-19 has affected life in your school, your home, and your community. (In terms of still photography, you may submit individual images that stand alone or a series of photos.) Topics might include empty shelves in stores and empty classrooms, or health care workers bravely battling this virus. Stories might also focus on how you and your family are dealing with this pandemic – playing games, making meals together, and, of course, navigating the new educational system of distance learning. We urge you to go out and record the history that is being made all around you (and be sure to identify your photos by location and date).
Again, we are looking for photojournalism. We are asking you to do a lot with this application – write an essay and send us your transcript and recommendations – so if you are submitting still photos, please don’t ruin your chances of being considered by entering images of flowers, glamour shots or kittens – no matter how adorable they may be.
Scholarship applications must be submitted between July 15, 2020 and Midnight, the Evening of November 15th, 2020.
Scholarships will be announced and awarded in early to mid-December.
