JHS SENIOR PARENTS: Here is a list of helpful information for college going seniors> As you may know, senior fall is when students finalize their college lists and begin applying to college! Over the next few months, I encourage you to help your child do six main things, ahead of their actual college applications: Request letters of recommendation: Most colleges require 1-2 letters of recommendation from teachers. Here’s some advice on how to choose the best recommenders and what information to provide them. (Re)take the SAT/ACT, if needed: If your child hasn’t taken the SAT/ACT yet, they should probably do so (unless applying for test-optional schools only). Or if your child is unhappy with their previous scores, they may choose to retake the test. Finalize their college list: Your child should be sure to include a combination of safety, target, and reach schools in their list. They should also decide whether they’d like to apply early action/decision for their top-choice school(s). Here’s some advice on all of that. Fill out their FAFSA form: The FAFSA form is the federal government financial aid form. To receive need-based grants or scholarships (from the government or your college!), your child will need to fill it out (and likely need your help with it!). The application opens on October 1, and lots of aid is first-come, first-served, so apply early. Prepare your essays: Many colleges will ask for one main essay; some more prestigious colleges will also have additional essays or short-answer questions. Here’s some information for your child to write their main college essay / personal statement. Apply for scholarships: Most scholarships are geared towards high school seniors, and the ones with earlier deadlines (Sept-Dec) tend to receive fewer applicants, which means your child has a higher chance of winning! To find and apply for scholarships, I recommend that your child sign up for Going Merry.
