ACADEMY APPT
The process to receive an appointment and be admitted to one of our nation's military academies is a long and difficult process that begins early in your high school career. Those students that truly have a desire to serve in the military and have gone through the process believe it is well worth all the effort.
Although the ACT requirement for Academy admissions is a 26 composite, admission to an Academy is highly competitive. Students need to work to get their ACT or SAT score as high as possible. The average ACT composite for students competing for Congressional nominations in Oklahoma's Congressional District 5 is 30+.
The process begins in middle school where students need to begin taking as rigorous of coursework that is available in the school.
Freshman and Sophomores need to continue taking rigorous coursework with emphasis placed on Math and Science. Freshman and Sophomores also need to get acquainted with the Military Academy websites. All academies offer summer programs for younger high school students called STEM camps. It is advantageous to register for these.
Juniors, beginning their application process for the academy they would like to attend, normally start around December of their Junior Year. Juniors can also apply to attend Summer Seminar. Most academies open the application for summer seminar on February 1. March or April of Junior Year, juniors begin the application process to receive a congressional nomination. Juniors also need to apply to attend Boys or Girls State.
Summer between junior and senior years is very busy with interviews by Academy Admissions officers. If you can complete most of the application over the summer, you will have less stress in your senior year.
Seniors will continue to complete their applications for both admissions and congressional nomination. In addition, seniors need to apply for other colleges and scholarships as a backup to a Military Academy. In addition, you receive points on your Military Academy application for every college that accepts you, which increases your chances to get accepted at a Military Academy.
